JPI chairs state: joint research is essential to address grand societal challenges
December 1st 2017, the competitiveness council of the European Union met to consider ways to solve global challenges in the next EU multiannual framework for research and innovation (FP9), the successor of the current Horizon 2020 programme. This will result in a set of draft conclusions titled "From the interim evaluation of Horizon 2020 towards the ninth framework programme" being submitted to the European Council for approval.
In the light of the upcoming discussions regarding the future framing of research and innovation in Europe and strengthening the European Research Area, the ten joint programming initiatives have released a jointly developed statement on how to address grand societal challenges in Europe and beyond. Its key message is strengthening the role of excellent research to inform policy and support decision-making from local to global levels to overcome these challenges.
